The Australian backyard has changed considerably in the last few decades so a Great Australian Backyard Survey was commissioned by AdBri Masonry to get a handle on what’s going on… or in our backyards.
It’s hard to know what is a ‘typical’ great Australian backyard anymore because space and lifestyle play such a role in how we choose to live outdoors. However, the Great Australian Backyard Survey revealed that 82% of all Australians rate as ‘important’ having some form of outdoor space when they decide to purchase or rent a home. Almost half (48.4%) say it’s very important.
And do you know the top five reasons Aussies want some outdoor space? Relaxation topped the list with 69.45%. The remainder was for gardening, entertaining, outdoor dining and for kids to play.
The Great Australian Backyard Survey also found out the top five things Aussies want in their backyard. Topping the list was an outdoor dining/entertaining area and then came garden/veggie patch, outdoor kitchen, swimming pool/spa and a water feature.
No surprises that the top priorities were eating, drinking and entertaining. According to the results, 33% of Australians spend at least one hour in their backyard everyday and 8 – 15 hours per month maintaining it. And a whopping 62% have invested in their backyard in the last 12 months. Respondents said the investment had enhanced their homes, improved their lifestyle, improved their overall health and stress levels, and increased the time spent with family and children. Whilst 35% said they’d like to improve their backyard but couldn’t afford to, 21.5% reported that they plan to improve or renovate their backyard in the next 12-months.
