How many out-dated style ideas do you remember? Like never mixing patterns, always matching your shoes with your handbag or *gasp* ‘Green Should Never Be Seen’. Fashion trends come and go but true style is timeless.
Now, I’m not against personal style, pushing the envelope, not fitting in with the crowd – I love individualism in fashion. Designers such as Vivienne Westwood, Rei Kawakubo (founder of Comme des Garçons), Alexander McQueen, Jean-Paul Galtier, and many others have built incredibly successful careers and fashion houses by not following the rules. More power to them. And in their own way, they have each created timeless style.
No, I’m thinking of timeless style being more about style rules that can help you be your best YOU. Timeless style tips that can help you appear taller, leaner and work with your natural shape.
Embrace your shape. Highlight the positives and eliminate the negatives. Dressing for your body shape and not fighting it is the number one way to look and feel sexier, more confident and more comfortable in your own skin. Figure out what looks best on your body, or ask for help from friends or a stylist. And don’t be afraid to try something new…just to see.
There are ways to minimise a big bust, create a waist, appear more curvy, appear less curvy, accentuate long legs, minimise wide calves, etc. Once you learn what works on your body you’ll have an easier time buying clothes and be more confident when you step out the door.
Embrace your tailor. No-one has the perfect body…NO-ONE! Good tailoring that enhances your best features and minimises those you want to hide will ensure you look your best…and therefore be more confident. Tailoring clothes allows you to accentuate the best version of yourself. If you need a waistband nipped in or a jacket seam taken out, find a tailor you trust and have them it clothes to your silhouette.
Tag sizes are meaningless. I have sizes in my wardrobe from 10 – 16 because their is absolutely no uniformity when it comes to clothing label sizes. So to obsess over the tag is quite insane, and will just make you feel bad. So forget about size; look for style and fit that makes you feel good.
Match your shoes to the hem of your jeans. Most jeans don’t look good with both high and low heels. Skinnies look good with brogues, ballet flats, ankle boots, pumps and stilettos, but that’s about it. Wider hems need to be the right length for the height of the shoe. So pick flats or heels and hem those jeans accordingly; don’t mix ‘n match.
Nude shoes go with everything. Not only do nude pumps, sandals and stilettos go with everything they also elongate the leg because there is no visual break between shoe and hem. Genius! Nude shoes are also elegant and timeless; just ensure you match the nude or blush tone to your skintone.
Invest in good underwear. This is the base that will help your clothes fall better on your body. By wearing underwear (or shapewear) that doesn’t bulge, snag, sag or cut into your skin your clothing will sit and fall in a streamlined way.
Balance is key. If you are wearing a tight top then don’t wear a tight bottom (unless you look awesome in a bandage dress). Similarly, don’t wear baggy clothes on the top and the bottom. By balancing your clothes and thinking about proportion, you will appear more stylish. For example, an oversize jacket with skinnies.
Wear a statement necklace or scarf to transform any outfit. I love a great statement necklace and I wear lots of scarves in the winter. They can elevate even the most basic outfit, or act as the hero piece of your clothing. And the great thing about both of these is that you can wear them with anything from jeans to a little black dress. Yes, really!
Black is a great style option. This is probably the most timeless style tip of all. Black is elegant, slimming and a great foil for statement shoes or a statement necklace. Buy the best quality black you can afford, because cheap black fabric isn’t timeless style and it will cheapen the effect of your outfit.
Have two different bags. OK, so most women have more than two bags but ensure you have at least these two; a large bag – such as a tote, doctor’s or bowling bag – and a great clutch. Of course, one is for day and one is for night or when you aren’t carrying your life around with you.
Don’t let sales sway you. It’s not a bargain if you don’t need it and will never use it. It might seem like a good price but if it doesn’t fit properly (and can’t be tailored to fit…and you WILL take them to the tailor, right?) or it doesn’t suit you then leave it BEHIND!
Timeless style is exactly that, timeless. These tips will take you through your wardrobe decisions for decades and enable you to be true to your own sense of style.
