I am a lover of art – hanging, object d’art, sculpture, quirky pieces, fabulous finds – but sometimes it’s hard to know how to display your precious memorabilia. Take hanging pictures, for example. They can be tricky, especially if you want to hang a collection together or figure out which pictures should go where.

So I asked Sarah Cichy for some perfect hanging ideas. Sarah is the Founder and Director of one of Sydney’s most reputable PR agencies – Piccolo PR – an agency that specialises in homewares and fabulous stuff for kids. Sarah has the enviable job of being surrounded by the latest homewares and trends from all over our fair world; so I think she knows a thing or two about art!

Sarah has provided some great tips on how to select and position artwork so your decor can easily and successfully be enhanced, plus you’ll find perfect hanging ideas for the art you love.

Artwork is an important part of the decor of your home as it reflects your personality. Designers & stylists use art to set a mood, add an accent or re-create an existing space – it adds personality to your home and brings color and creativity into your world, says Sarah.

Selecting artwork that helps to frame a room is important. However, that’s only the first part of a puzzle that I’m going to help you solve.

Perfect Hanging Ideas: Find The Right Height

Often art is hung too high rather than having the centre of the art at eye level. Think about living rooms where people tend to sit – so artwork can be hung lower. A good rule of thumb is to have the bottom of the frame one hand width above the back of the sofa.

Perfect Hanging Ideas: Be Spacially Aware

Consider the wall space and how your artwork will be viewed when furniture is arranged. Large pieces on a large wall need to have room for people to step back and admire. Small artworks get lost on large walls so position them between doors and windows.

Perfect Hanging Ideas: Keep The Balance

If a strong art work is to the ‘Hero Piece’ then pare back on other pieces and colours to ensure you don’t overpower and ‘confuse’ the room. Artwork with strong colors, dramatic shapes and angles are best placed on a neutral background.

Perfect Hanging Ideas: Light and Bright

Decide what type of mood you want to create as your artwork should complement that. Use dim-switchers which will help to highlight certain accents of artwork.

Perfect Hanging Ideas: Child’s Play

When choosing art work for nurseries and children’s bedrooms, don’t be too ‘design-led’, choose kind and caring works.

Welly’s Wonders are the newest creatures in town- these gentle, timeless and charming characters were born out of a desire to teach our children to Be Kind. Imagine. Collectables include a suite of A4 and A3 prints, baby and children’s clothing, accessories and artwork that enable our little ones to take a step back in time and enjoy a piece of this retro renaissance.

Perfect Hanging Ideas: Digital Delights

Children often come home with pieces of artwork you really want to keep, but you don’t want them piled up on the kitchen benchtop. Take a photo to capture their ‘masterpiece’ and then frame or arrange to suit your decor. You’ll have an original mosaic that lasts forever.
