When Laura Ciccone cut off her cousin’s hair.. it wasn’t good. Laura was five and her cousin was three, with flowing long hair. The hair was stuffed into Barbie’s bag and Laura’s cousin was blamed for cutting off her own hair. Ooops. Since then, Laura Ciconne has dramatically increased her hair cutting skills.

Originally studying beauty when she left Year 12, it didn’t hold the fascination for Laura that was provided by hairdressing. Her apprenticeship salon, Hair Machine, introduced Laura to fashion and the competitive side of the hair industry – Awards. Moving to Kinky Curly Straight as a qualified stylist, Laura Ciconne had already established herself as a session stylist and creative hair artist. Now a Head Stylist at Kinky Curly Straight, Laura recently was a dynamic and informed guest on my Fashion + Home radio show. As a Head Stylist, Session Stylist and Winner of Stylist of The Year, Laura was very willing to share her knowledge. Given it’s awards season and in the lead-up to Valentine’s Day, we focused on up-styles.

Laura Ciconne says that hair, dress and make-up must be considered together especially for up-styling. The face shape, desired makeup and dress all impact on which up-style will best suit the client. So discuss with you hair stylist, the make-up, jewellery and dress you plan to wear. Laura also talked about the condition and length of your hair, especially in the months before a wedding. Work with your hairstylist months in advance to improve hair condition, grow out old cuts, add length and discuss extensions and other ways to get the up-style you desire.

A great tip was supermarket versus salon brand shampoos and conditioners. Laura says many supermarket brands contain silicone that coat the hair shaft. This is the natural enemy of an up-style because curls can fall out and hair will be too soft to manipulate correctly. Laura suggests not using such brands before an up-do. Or, better still, buy a salon brand.
