Everyone loves having a healthy summer glow because it helps us look fit, well, and vibrant. But getting it shouldn’t put us in danger of being ill.

Summer will soon be here and with it the feel of the warmth of the sun on our skin. I can’t WAIT! Many people love being tanned as it reminds us of how good summer can feel and leaves us with a healthy summer glow.

There is nothing wrong with a healthy tan to go with your beach body, but only if it is, in fact, healthy. Although the sun is a vital source of vitamin D, and it helps fight depression, it is still dangerous.

If you’re going to to catch luscious rays of sunlight, make sure you’re being smart about it.

Smart Ways To Get A Healthy Summer Glow

Follow some basic sun safety rules

The best protection against sunburn is basic sun safety rules. In addition to wearing sun protection whenever you go out – and topping it up throughout the day – you should also avoid tanning between 10 AM and 4 PM when the sun is strongest. Always wear a hat and sunglasses if you need to go out and always stay hydrated.

Not only is drinking water good for your body during a heatwave, water has amazing benefits for your skin that should not be undervalued.

Use sunscreen, not sunblock

Since childhood, we’ve been told that we should not spend hours in the sun without protection. There are two types of sun lotion designed to protect your skin from harmful UV rays.

Sunblock is a physical kind of lotion, containing both organic and non-organic ingredients that sit on top of the skin acting as a barrier between your skin and damaging UV rays by reflecting or scattering the light.

Sunscreen is a chemical lotion that penetrates the skin and filters the sun’s UV rays. Essentially, it keeps most rays out but lets some in, which means that your skin can absorb the vitamin D emitted by the sun.

Since your body still needs to absorb vitamin D for health reasons, sunscreen is the better option for your beach days. A minimum SPF of 30 is recommended and must be applied 20-30 minutes before you go outside.

Know the warning signs

It’s important that you know the early warning signs of melanoma (skin cancer) so you can get it treated as soon as possible.

You can go to skin cancer clinics at CBD Medical Centre for clarification. However, if you notice any small and scaly patches of skin, or any asymmetrical or atypical moles (knowing the ABCDE of melanoma would be useful), then book yourself an appointment with a dermatologist as soon as possible.

Always check for new moles on your back or lower leg at least once a month. These are areas you don’t notice often, yet they’re common locations for melanoma.

Keep up a good skincare routine

During the summer, you need skincare routine that keeps your skin clean, hydrated, and free of grime. You might find you’re more prone to breakouts in the summer because the sweat can clog your pores if you don’t clean your face on a regular basis.

You should also use an effective moisturizer to prevent your skin from drying out.
