It’s a question I am often asked, because other women do want to know the habits of highly stylish women. I am in awe of women who effortlessly pair interesting colours and those that take risks with their fashion; like Miroslava Duma. So what does it take you have true style?
Take inspiration from these seven habits of highly stylish women and personalise them. And that’s the first tip too.
#Personalise, Don’t Copy
Many fashion designers and trend forecasters will tell you that street style is their number one source for what’s going to be trending in fashion. However, one of the habits of highly stylish women is to NOT slavishly follow street style blogs. Highly stylish women are sent clothing for free by designers who hope they will be snapped wearing their creations.
However, truly stylish women don’t wear an entire outfit from one label. They mix ‘n match labels and add interesting accessories. Whilst the clothing they wear is usually expensive, you can find less expensive labels with very similar on-trend designs – such as Supre, Target and Witchery. Take inspiration from street style icons like Taylor Tomasi Hill but don’t style yourself exactly the same – Personalise, Don’t Copy.
#Develop Your Style Taste
Stylish women know what suits them and the image they want to convey, even if that differs from Boho to Modern to Vintage to Evening – no-one said you had to have the same style genre – mix it up according to yuor own tastes.
One of the habits of highly stylish women is that they take an everyday item and style it differently – maybe it’s tucked in or has the sleeves rolled up in a way that’s different. If the item is vintage, then team it with killer earrings, a very modern coat or add an unexpected flourish. Make it your own!
#Shop The Look
Another one of the cool habits of highly stylish women is that they don’t shop habitually; they’ll go in to ANY store to check out what’s there. So don’t be afraid to change up your shopping habits, look further afield for new stores, shop on-line, add vintage, and search the goodwill stores.
Add something different and unique to one of your staple labels and watch your stylish cache increase.
#Labels Don’t Make You Cool
Every stylish woman in the world will tell you that the label doesn’t mean a thing. Don’t confuse that with not ‘caring’ about a label or knowing that some labels are simply divine – yes, I’m looking at you Tom Ford.
Being stylish is about being unique and confident, so it’s YOU that is cool not the label.
#Confidence Is The Ultimate Style
If you can’t walk in those fabulously expensive and very on-trend heels then you won’t be confident, or stylish. Stylish women do exude a carefree confidence because they dress for themselves and their lifestyles, not to impress others.
You may notice that some of the most stylish women don’t wear loud, attention-grabbing clothes. It’s the confidence with which they wear their clothes that stands out.
#Less Is More
It’s about being a little less perfect, whilst simultaneously being perfectly stylish. One of the habits of highly stylish women is that they appear just a little too cool for the surroundings, without being rude or out-of-place. It’s the small things, like gorgeous flats when everyone is wearing heels. Or a pantsuit when the dress du jour is cocktail. Stylish women don’t seem to try hard because they are just a little more relaxed than everyone else.
#Stylish Women Aren’t Slaves to Fashion
They may be on-trend and stylish, but that’s not the same as being a slave to fashion. When it comes to the habits of highly stylish women the most important is that THEY come first, not the fashion.Personally I abhor culottes – can’t stand them, I think they are anti-style – yet other women love them, other Style Editors love them. Few women wear them well.
Stylish women don’t buy into trends especially if they know it doesn’t suit them. They simply WON’T wear something just to be fashionable, and neither should you.
That’s the seven habits of highly stylish women. The common thread is being personal, true to yourself. Now go and overhaul your wardrobe and find new ways to wear old clothes – and soon YOU’LL be on the list of highly stylish women. Go get ’em!
