Seriously, could clutter be making you fat? This is not such a silly suggestion when you consider some of the elements that link clutter with over-eating. How can that be? I’ll explain.

When I interviewed Oprah’s De-clutter Guru, Peter Walsh, we discussed one of his books –  Does This Clutter Make My Butt Look Big? I thought it was a strange concept but could clutter be making you fat makes absolute sense when you think about it.

In a disorganised home when your pantry is cluttered, your fridge is disorganised, your cupboards are a basket case, and you’re a busy mum with ravenous kids sitting down each week to plan a menu isn’t a priority.

If you can’t find what you need in the cupboards, if your fridge is growing things it shouldn’t, and you’ve just come home from a big day at work the last thing you want to do is chop vegies, cut the fat off meat, and think about a food pyramid approved meal.

What’s the default? That’s right – fast food! We all do it. We go for quick, pre-prepared meals that tend to be high in fat, sugar, and salt or we get takeaway – fish ‘n chips, KFC, etc. So… could clutter be making you fat?

I hadn’t really considered this until I spoke with Peter Walsh. So.. could clutter be making you fat? I guarantee that if you have a well-laid out pantry, an organised fridge, and set aside time to meal plan your waistline will thank you.

One of Peter’s tips that I loved was this;

  1. Remove all your kitchen utensils from drawers, stands, and cupboards
  2. Place them all in a box – perhaps on the floor of the laundry or pantry
  3. Each time you use a utensil, put it back in the drawer, cupboard, or stand
  4. After 3 – 6 months, donate or throw away all the utensils still left in the box

If you haven’t used a kitchen utensil in six months then it’s unlikely you will.
