When I first saw the raw beauty of Convict bags, I didn’t realise they were Australian. But that thought was fleeting as I learned the unique history of Convict and it’s homage to Australia’s first female convicts. Convict is not a modern reinvention of bags used by convicts, but rather a charming lesson in history. Each bag is named for an Australian female convict of the 1800’s and comes with a ‘certified’ history of her origins and ending, if that is known.

Founders, Georgina and Karen. Thom tablet cover or unisex clutch

Above is the Thom tablet cover which fits  an ipad and doubles as a smart, unisex clutch RRP $165

Australian-made Perth label, Convict, was launched in September 2013 by Georgina and Karen. It has a philosophy of timeless luxury, craftsmanship and the raw beauty of Australia. The ‘barefoot’ Australian lifestyle is embodied in the Convict bags which are beautifully pared back and utilitarian with a natural aesthetic using the highest quality hair-on cowhides and aniline leathers.

Convict is a breath of fresh air in the local accessory market – not only is the label a registered Australian Made certified company, the heart of the label is authentically Australian. The Convict label began life shortly after the discovery of Georgina and Karen’s mutual love of Dorothea MacKellar’s iconic poem ‘My Country’. These evocative words are a reflection of the duo’s emotional attachment to Australia and it was then decided that their burgeoning accessory label would be a truly Australian venture.

Mina Tote

Mina Tote

On the label’s name, Georgina says “Our Convict story wouldn’t be complete without research the amazing convict records. We found moving accounts of individuals and families – stories of resilience, of hardship and tragedy, of bushrangers and pirates and daring escapes. We chose a few to continue their journey with us.”

The beautifully proportioned Mina Tote is the most versatile of the collection. It has generous proportions for versatile use, day and night. The Mina Tote is fashioned from summer cut cowhide and the softest aniline combinations finished with brown ‘Wild West’ leather handles. Ideal for traveling…or almost anything. RRP$595

Mina Tote in black. Bridget Bowler in beige

Mina Tote in black. Bridget Bowler in beige

Similar to the Mina Tote, the Bridget Bowler cleverly disguises cavernous storage. If you have to lug around lots of stuff but want to look chic and elegant doing it, then the Bridget Bowler is for you; deceptively roomy. RRP $415

Jane Tote

Jane Tote in beige

The tulip-shaped Jane Tote is no plain Jane either. Sculpted from luxurious summer cut cowhide and soft, soft aniline leather, carry Jane and be admired. RRP $450

Sophia Boxy Satchel. Jane Tote in black.

Well, we saw the lovely Jane Tote in beige and also black above. Here is the Sophia Boxy satchel (striking in black above, mellow in beige below). This cross-over-body bag will stylishly keep your hands free and be the perfect companion from day to night. RRP $265

Sophia Boxy satchel. Esther wallet

Sophia Boxy satchel. Esther wallet

Perfect as a wallet or mini clutch, the Esther wallet is lined, has an inside pocket and zip fastening across the top and one side. As with all Convict bags, the nature of the natural markings on the hide makes each item unique. RRP $95

Bridget Bowler in black. Annette oversize pouch

To the left is another view of the fabulous Bridget Bowler in black. And to the right is the Annette oversize pouch in Brown Cow. Her versatility is almost as impressive as her beauty as Annette can be worn over the shoulder, beltless, rolled and…dare we say..wrapped around the waist! And it has a trendy reversible strap.

Grace cross body bag. Betsy saddle bag

I love a great cross-body bag and Convict have a coupe of beauties. We saw the Sophia Boxy earlier and above is the Grace cross body bag with an unstructured style. If you don’t want people stopping you to ask where you bought it, don’t buy it. RRP $195.

For me, the Betsy satchel is the closet thing to what I perceive as a bag possibly used by a convict. Maybe it’s the gunmetal colour, pared back looks or practicality. It’s a perfect day bag, tho, for the practical girl. RRP $245

I hope you have enjoyed meeting Convict and the woman who have inspired a whole collection of new Australiana. Their names will live on, and if you purchase one, so will their history. Not for nothing eh?

You can inquire about these unique bags at Convict.

I featured Convict in a piece on Last Minute Gift Ideas for Mother’s Day in my new ‘Gift Ideas You’ll Love’ so please have a look at other beautiful gifts you can buy, for you or someone you love.
