Bedroom storage for kids may be the single most important component of a family home. If your house is anything like mine, there is never enough storage. And then when you want your kids to clean up after themselves too…well, good luck with that!
Kids can be taught to clean up and put toys back after use, it just takes some patience…and some really clever bedroom storage for kids that you’ll love to have and they’ll love to use.

I love this cool idea from Pebble Design who seem to know what constitutes clever bedroom storage for kids – LEGO! Cupboards can be built out of cheap, but sturdy wood, such as pine and then painted in colours that match Lego blocks. Large pieces of doweling have been cut to match the look of Lego. The cushions can be fashioned from offcuts of flat cushioning and then covered in tough fabric to match. The result is fun and playful, and doesn’t have to cost a fortune.

Cubes are always an excellent bedroom storage for kids idea because they are practical, fit most spaces, and can easily be painted to match any decor. Cubes can be on the floor, on the wall or around a corner. Lower cubes can be used for toys your kids use more often and higher cubes can contain ‘toys for when they are older’. Cubes can also readily secure tubs, cane baskets, and canvas bags which hold toys and play items. Cost-effective options are available at outlets like IKEA and Bunnings and can be quickly added to a child’s room.

Of course, bedroom storage for kids will involve beds. Cubes are also nice and neat when combined with sleeping areas and can act to delineate space. Cosying up on a bed to read should be encouraged for children and putting books back on the shelf when they are finished.
Bedrooms also often contain desks for doing homework so good storage around these areas will stop clutter accumulating; thus creating fewer distractions from doing homework…well, that’s the theory.

Pinboards are a great addition and create bedroom storage for kids art work, reminder notices, photos and the like. Positioned at eye-level, kids can see at notes a glance …try pinning a notice to tell them to clean up their room and see what happens. Magnetic boards with colourful placeholders are also great for kids and there are many cheap options available at IKEA. PLus storage for pens, crayons, chalk and felt tips that tend to come loose and roll around under beds.

Shelving is an imperative in bedroom storage for kids and can be done very creatively. Many kids like bunkbeds and the often under-used or even dis-used space under the steps can be used for shelving.
You can also get quite creative in spaces between bedrooms to house shelving but also create secret passages or hidden bookshelves, haunted house style.

The space around and across windows can be used for shelving where art works are usually hung. This creates great bedroom storage for kids in a potentially dead area. Similarly, wall murals can be stylishly used to hold books or DVDs’ – in the example below, some tree branches have been turned into shelving. Very clever.

And finally, wardrobe space. As kids grow their wardrobe space needs change. Find wardrobe systems that give you flexibility like those from IKEA or Howard’s Storage World. Hanging space, shelves and even drawers can be changed to suit a growing child and their needs.
